Bringing Generations Together...

Simon

What does your role entail at the Penlee Family Project?

“My role entails making collective decisions concerning the Project itself, and also concerning the community that we serve. I also volunteer, when circumstances allow, at the Friday Friendship sessions, and evaluate how the sessions progress, taking on board any suggestions that the user’s of the Friday Friendship group may have.”

What do you like about being a Director for the Penlee Family Project?

“The thing I enjoy best is seeing what effect the group has on it’s users. From those who would otherwise be secluded, to the ones with additional needs, the Project is invaluable to its users. We had a lunch together with the Project users recently, and to see the joy in one particular user, from engaging in conversation to the sheer elation when her trifle arrived, really brought home to me how important this Project is.

I just love the way the group bonds, no matter what the age/ability/disability. Having been involved with Penlee since the start, I love the whole journey that the group has made – from all being quite reserved at the beginning (not knowing each other) to where they are now, helping each other, interacting, and also communicating with some of the non-English speakers, albeit via Google Translate!!”

What do you like to do in your free time?

“In my free time I enjoy reading books on my Kindle. I tend to watch TV through streaming apps, as I don’t always have the time to watch terrestrial TV. I like Sci-Fi series and movies, although my TV “slot” seems to be when everyone else is in bed! It’s always nice to be outdoors with my family although since undergoing back surgery I find it difficult to walk the distances that I used to.”
